Moving to a new country is exciting — but it can also be confusing. Things that seem obvious to people who have grown up here can feel surprisingly difficult when you are new to Sweden.

How do you communicate in everyday situations? How do you understand the unwritten rules? How do you navigate Swedish workplaces and social life? And how do you feel that you truly belong?

Hi, I'm Jasna. I started Sweden For Beginners because I know that navigating a new culture takes more than learning the language.

I have spent much of my career working in international and multicultural environments — as a teacher at universities and schools in different countries, as a coordinator of teaching teams, an inspector evaluating European schools, and a senior adviser in government administration.

Along the way, I learned that cultural differences are rarely just about language. They influence how we communicate, how we build relationships, how we work together, and even how we understand what is expected of us.

My own experience of working with people from different cultural backgrounds has given me a deep interest in intercultural communication and the many ways people adapt to new environments. It also led me to intercultural coaching, where I help people understand the cultural barriers they encounter and find practical ways to move beyond them.

Sweden For Beginners grew out of that experience — and out of my belief that settling into a new country should not feel like trying to decode a secret language.

I bring curiosity, empathy and a lifelong love of learning to my work. I also believe that understanding a culture does not mean accepting every convention without question. Sometimes, a little context, a good explanation and a sense of humour can make all the difference.

My goal is simple: to help newcomers feel more confident, capable and at home in Sweden.

Jasmina Vukonjanski

Language Consultant and Associate

With a background in English language and literature and a master’s degree in linguistics, Jasmina has built her career around languages, learning, and helping people understand each other. She has worked in secondary schools and translation agencies and currently works as a förstelärare (lead teacher) at Språkcentrum in Stockholm.

After moving to Sweden, she continued her education in entrepreneurship and Swedish, completed studies in Hungarian, and explored leadership through a course at Långholmens folkhögskola.

At Sweden for Beginners, Jasmina brings her passion for languages and effective learning to life. She has co-authored an e-book and hosted webinars on working and living in Sweden. 

Outside work, she enjoys crocheting toys and is a devoted animal lover. Her cat, Alex, has a particular talent for making surprise appearances at digital meetings — usually without checking the calendar first.

Jasminka Franic

Marketing Communications and Content Consultant

Art historian and linguist by education, communications professional in the tech sector by experience, Jasminka brings these two different worlds together to do what she enjoys most: turning complicated ideas into engaging and easy-to-digest content.

After moving to Sweden, she built a new professional and personal network by joining professional communities and learning the ins and outs of the Swedish job market.

At Sweden for Beginners, Jasminka is the face behind the new website — and the person who will stubbornly insist that there must be a structured way of doing things.
